About us

Introduction

The First Presbyterian Church is the oldest of our denomination (organized in 1829) in Lackawanna County, and the oldest established church in Carbondale, even before the incorporation of Carbondale as a city in 1851. The building is located at the corner of Church Street and Salem Avenue, and  is the fourth on the same site. We are part of the Presbytery of Lackawanna, in the Synod of the Trinity, which is part of the Presbyterian Church (USA).

City of Carbondale

Carbondale is located in the extreme northeast corner of Lackawanna County in Pennsylvania. The first incorporated city in Lackawanna County, Carbondale now has about 10,000 citizens and embraces many different religious denominations. Church Street alone contains six different denominations, three being on the same block. Some denominations are Presbyterian, Methodist, Roman Catholic (Irish and Italian), Baptist, Assembly of God, Episcopal, among several others.

Carbondale is in the Carbondale Area School District. The school district consists of Carbondale Area Jr./Sr. High School, Carbondale Elementary, and Fell Charter Schools.

The Church and Programs

The Presbyterian Church has grown from eight persons, five gentlemen and three ladies, in 1829, to just about 100 active members now, over 180 years later. Worshiping at 10:30 AM each Sunday, we also offer various programs throughout the week: Sunday School, Nursery, Chancel Choir, Jr. Choir, Brass Ensemble, Sewing Group, Women’s Association, and Prayer Chain.

Sunday School starts at 9:15 AM each Sunday during the school months, September through June. Our Sunday School consists of classes for children ages three through adult.

We also have the nursery open during worship services for children under age five.

Our Chancel Choir sings at every service, and usually meets Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM, except during the summer months. The choir is open for anyone who wishes to join. The Jr. Choir rehearses after worship each Sunday, and sings once a month.

Our Brass Ensemble is a new group, formed in 2007. Rehearsing Friday evenings at 6:30 PM, they play during special services throughout the year. Anyone who plays a brass instrument is invited to join this group.

A sewing group meets every Tuesday morning at 10 AM. The Sewing Group does many things, such as sewing, quilting, and other craft projects. We invite all, men and women alike, to the Sewing Group.

The Presbyterian Women’s Association is open for any lady who wishes to join. Meetings are usually held on the third Thursday of each month, except during the summer months. The Women’s Association sells brooms and knives to help defray some of the church’s expenses. Once a year, the women hold a smorgasbord dinner, fall festival, and craft bazaar, also to raise money for the work of the church.

We also have a Prayer Chain, which sends prayer requests by telephone through a series of people who, in turn, pray for whatever the request is. We think prayer is very important for our spiritual growth, and we ask everyone to join in prayer for our church, its leaders, and for our pastor.
