First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale

The First Presbyterian Church is the oldest of our denomination (organized in 1829) in Lackawanna County, and the oldest established church in Carbondale, even before the incorporation of Carbondale as a city in 1851. The building is located at the corner of Church Street and Salem Avenue, and is the fourth on the same site. We are part of the Presbytery of Lackawanna, in the Synod of the Trinity, which is part of the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Mission & Vision

Presbyterian mission’s goal is to inspire, equip and connect the church in three main areas: evangelism and discipleship, servant leader formation, and justice and reconciliation.
We do this work through these ministry areas: advocating for positive change, ending racism, empowering women, building intercultural communities, and transforming disciples.

What We Believe

At the core of Presbyterian identity is a secure hope in the grace of God in Jesus Christ, a hope that, by the power of the Holy Spirit, empowers us to live lives of gratitude: “In affirming with the earliest Christians that Jesus is Lord, the Church confesses that he is its hope, and that the Church, as Christ’s body, is bound to his authority and thus free to live in the lively, joyous reality of the grace of God.”
